Chapter Eleven

Robin walked down the path, looking at people around her. It was almost bedtime, and everyone was preparing for the prayer session before they went to bed. Robin still didn’t remember what had happened when she had participated in the last sermon, but a glimpse of her memories had returned, and she didn’t like what she saw at all.

“So, who are you, really?” Chris’s voice suddenly pulled her out of her thoughts.

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“No one has met John that often in the entire group,” he said. “And yet, he continues to meet with you. He went as far as to call you to his tent. You have permission to ask questions, something that no one here does, and you have a fishy story about meeting Bane. I don’t think you are who you say you are.”

“Why don’t you ask John about it?” Robin asked.

“And risk being punished?” he asked.

“I thought this was a peace-loving community,” she said. “I didn’t know they did punishments here.”

Chris smirked and said, “Well, you thought wrong. This place isn’t how you see it. There are a lot of dark secrets. Secrets that I doubt most of the people here know.”

“How could that be?” Robin asked. “How could they not know? In a small community like this, how can anything be kept a secret?”

“Oh, you don’t need to keep a secret,” Chris said. “You just need to prevent them from remembering it.”

“Why are you telling me all this?” Robin asked.

“Because, like me, you are an imposter,” he said. “I was born and raised here. I have never known any other life. My parents were devout Christians until one day, they both suddenly disappeared. They had just reached the age of fifty. Doesn’t it surprise you that no one here is older than fifty except for the elders? They told me that my parents chose to leave the community because they had fulfilled their goal of redemption. I asked to leave too, but then, I had a horrible vision about the outside world during the next prayer session. The Elders said that I saw my fate and my future and that great danger awaits me outside. I was so scared I agreed, but I was disillusioned. I started to question if what I saw wasn’t just a bad acid trip of some kind. I have been staying here, acting like a good boy because I am too scared to leave. But I don’t believe in a lot of things anymore. I don’t believe in redemption and prayers. And yet, I can’t leave. You are the same, aren’t you? You don’t really believe any of this. You are playing a part, that’s all.”

“You are very perceptive,” Robin said. “If I tell you who I am, will you help me?”

Chris grinned at her and said, “I may not have the guts to leave this place, but if I have a chance to expose how twisted these people are, I will take it.”

“I am a Detective,” Robin said.
